$100 million in 2 years! Durant is expected to reach a contract renewal with the Rockets
On August 11, according to NBC Sports reporter Kurt Hailin, the Houston Rockets are expected to sign a two-year, $100 million contract extension with NBA superstar Kevin Durant.
The contract will be lower than the maximum salary, as Durant can sign up to a two-year, $122.1 million extension with the Rockets. The small forward will earn $54.7 million next season, which is also the last year of his current contract.
Hirin wrote: "A source interviewed by NBC Sports during the summer league said that Durant may accept a two-year contract of about $100 million, which is about $10 million less than the maximum salary, but it can still reach $50 million per year." According to the maximum salary standard, if Durant renews his contract for 100 million in two years, he will receive a total of $22.1 million less.
The Rockets got Durant through the trade, and for this they gave Jaylen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in this year's draft and five second round picks. Last season, Durant averaged 26.6 points per game, shooting 52.7% from the field, 43.0% from three-pointers and 83.9% from free throws.
Today, the Rockets have a strong core lineup composed of Durant, Amen Thompson, Alperen Shinkin, Jabbarry Smith Jr. and Fred VanVleet.
Rockets head coach Uduka worked with Durant at the Brooklyn Nets in the 2020-21 season, and the two have a good relationship.
As a 15-time All-Star player, Durant averaged 27.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists in his career in 1,123 NBA games. He won consecutive championships with the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018 and was elected as the Finals MVP twice.
Durant did not attend the Rockets' debut press conference, but according to The Athletic's famous reporters Kelly Ico and Sam Amik, Durant was "extremely excited" about being traded to Houston.
Iko and Amik wrote: "According to a source close to Kevin Durant, the future Hall of Famer is 'extremely excited' about the opportunity to join the competitive team of Houston, with a talented coaching staff and a top five defensive roster in the league. He was in New York for Fanatics Fest event and interviewed, and the 15-time All-Star smiled brightly in front of hundreds of enthusiastic fans."
"Durant has one season left on his current contract (worth $54.7 million). Although he may not sign a contract extension when he is eligible for a contract extension in July, team sources said that everyone is convinced that it will be a long-term partnership. The theoretically, the Rockets' prospects look extremely bright."
