Antetokounmpo is absent from the warm-up match: FIBA insurance < annual salary of 54.13 million, the Bucks have not yet approved

Basketball

August 15th, in four warm-up matches of the European Championship, Greek player Antetokounmpo did not play due to insurance issues.

EuroHoops reporter Aris Barkas revealed that Antetokounmpo cannot play because the Bucks have not approved him to participate.

The Greek men's basketball team is currently waiting for written permission from the Bucks because Antetokounmpo's annual salary is much higher than the amount of insurance provided by FIBA when the player is injured. This situation where the annual salary is higher than the insurance premium must be approved by the club before participating.

In layman's terms, if Antetokounmpo is injured, the FIBA's insurance policy is not enough to pay his NBA contract, so the Bucks' official authorization is required, and the other two players enjoy similar protections: Doncic and Jokic, but both have been exempted.

Antetokounmpo's annual salary for the 2025-26 season is US$54.13 million.
