[Old General Record] The starting point for the printer s sharpshooter!
You should be familiar with Kyle Korver, the NBA's three-pointer shooter, besides those god-level three-pointers, his story is even more inspiring than imagined. In 2003, in the dormitory of Creton University, the young Korver sat in front of the TV, watching the draft with uneasiness.
That year, he was hailed as the golden generation of the NBA. The pride of heaven, James, became the No. 1 pick without any suspense, and then a number of super talents were named one after another.
And as the rankings got closer and further, Korver's uneasiness gradually heated up because his name had not been called yet. It was not until the 22nd pick in the second round that Korver was called on stage.
Looking back at Korver's basketball career, compared with other superstars, his basketball journey is relatively smooth. He was born in a basketball family since childhood. His father Kevin Korver, his mother Ryan Korver, and even his two uncles in the family were the main players of the college basketball team. My mother is a famous ball player who scored 74 points in a single game in the high school arena.
Under the influence of his eyes, Korver showed amazing basketball talent since he was a child, but at that time, the NBA was just a relatively distant dream for a white player like him.
After graduating from high school, Korver was not favored by many famous basketball schools, and he eventually chose Creton University, which was not well-known. For this university, the NBA history is not brilliant. As of 2025, only 18 NBA players have been trained in school history.
During Creton University, Korver grew up relatively well. Team head coach Dann Adelman teaches according to his aptitude and helps him focus on polishing a certain skill every semester. Gradually, Korver began to become a university star who can both inside and outside, offense and defense. In particular, his three-point shooting is particularly outstanding, with a three-point shooting percentage of 45.3% in college career. Before entering the NBA, he was already named a sharpshooter.
With the help of Korver, Cretton University has obtained many opportunities to fight against strong teams, defeating the University of Florida, Notre Dame and other powerful teams, ensuring that it will reach the NCAA Championship steadily every year. As the core of the team, Korver has always been a candidate in the eyes of the media who thinks there is a chance to be selected into the All-American team.
In the 2003 NBA Draft, Korver was selected by the New Jersey Nets, but was immediately traded to the Philadelphia 76ers.
Compared to this transaction, the story behind it is more interesting:
The Nets used this money to pay the Xialian fee for the remaining balance, and bought a printer for the remaining balance.
After 13 years, Korver also mentioned this when he returned to his alma mater to give a speech:
"That printer has long been broken, but I still play in the league."
After joining the 76ers, Korver faced tactical challenges when he first entered the league. Randy Ayers, then head coach, hopes that he will put breakthroughs and mid-range shots before three-pointers.
But with the subsequent team coach being fired, Jim O'Brien took over the team. During the first team training, Iverson and Korver performed a two-on-one fast break counterattack. Iverson passed the ball to Korver on the three-point line. Korver tried to dribble in the inside twice before choosing to take action. Coach O'Brien stopped the game and angrily criticized Korver:
"Next time I missed this kind of open space for direct shooting, you will end up with me!"
Although he was scolded, Korver felt relieved:
"I thought to myself at that time, this is a dream come true!"
Under the cover of Iverson's powerful offensive attraction, Korver's outside talent was beginning to be infinitely amplified. After his rookie season, Korver scored 226 three-pointers with a shooting percentage of 40.5%, breaking the league's three-pointer record at that time and becoming the single-season three-pointer record in the history of the Sixers at that time. It was not until 14 years later that the record was broken by Reddick in the 2018 season.
During his four and a half years of playing for the 76ers, Korver's roles are mostly the sixth player in the team. Although he is a second team player, his playing time is basically more than 30 minutes, and his offensive firepower output cannot be ignored.
After signing a six-year, 25 million long-term contract in 2005, Korver scored his best career performance in the 2006-07 season, averaging 14.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 0.8 steals, a three-point shooting percentage of 43%, and a free throw percentage of even 91.4% in the league's No. 1.
More importantly, Korver received careful guidance from Iverson during the 76ers. As a top-tier superstar in the league, although Iverson is only 183 in height, he relies on his gorgeous dribbling and unruly attitude to infect the entire league.
As the boss of the team, Iverson noticed this little white man who just joined the team very early. He saw his shooting talent, protected him like a big brother on the court, and continued to spur him in the training after the game. Borrowing Korver's memoirs is enough to see Iverson's help in the early stage:
"Especially my shooting, he always told me to have the confidence to shoot. This means a lot to me at that time."
In the 2004 All-Star Game, Korver was selected into the three-point competition. At that time, Iverson had already been a top star in the league, but he became a fan of the sidelines who was striving for Korver. In addition, Iverson also gave Korver his sneakers, training jerseys and other equipment to personally guide his shooting training. It was the company of this career enlightenment mentor who paved the way for Korver to future three-point shooting.
But unfortunately, Korver's ups and downs in the previous years of the 76ers, the team's core Iverson stopped due to injury, and the team's record was also fluctuating.
It was not until the team introduced Chris Webber in the 2004-05 season that they barely made it to the playoffs, but in the end they were only stopped in the first round. In 2006, Iverson and Webber left the team one after another, and the 76ers began to enter the reconstruction, and finally traded Korver to the Jazz in 2007.
Returning to the fact that Korver first entered the league, in the four and a half seasons of the 76ers, he scored 661 three-pointers. Such a three-point score was particularly rare in the NBA, where the three-pointers had not yet emerged. And he happened to catch up with the turning point of the league's style from inside to outside projection, and the value of the three-point shooter began to be valued by the league.
After leaving the 76ers, Korver gradually became the first choice for the league's championship teams. From leaving Philadelphia in 2008 to leaving the league in 2019, he had the opportunity to compete in the playoffs every year.
Until his last season with the Bucks in 2019, Korver made a total of 2,450 career three-point shootings, ranking eighth in NBA history, with a career shooting percentage of 42.8%.
is ranked behind superstars such as Curry, Harden, Ray Allen, Lillard, Thompson, Miller, James, etc., and is a benchmark representative of the NBA's outside offense in the new era.
Judging from the draft pick, Korver's second round pick is definitely not a talented player, nor is he in the spotlight when he enters the league like other talented rookies. However, Korver has become a player that cannot be ignored in the long river of history through hard work and belief.
For such a sharpshooter, his appearance has never been based on luck alone.
