The Celtics used the second round pick to win the inside Iron King Kong. Is he an excellent inside defender?

Basketball

In this year's NBA Draft, the Boston Celtics and the Orlando Magic reached a deal. The Celtics sent the 32nd second round pick to the Magic, and exchanged the Magic for the 46th second round pick, the 57th second round pick, and two second round picks in 2026 and 2027. Then, the Celtics selected Amari Williams, the big five inside swinger who had previously played for Kentucky with the 46th pick he just got.

Amari Williams from the UK was born in January 2002. He is 23 years old, 208cm tall and weighs 113kg. He is a No. 5 player with a strong figure, good counterattack ability and excellent inside defense. This season, Williams transferred from Dresel University to join the University of Kentucky. In the NCAA field this season, he played 36 times for the University of Kentucky, all of which were the starters. His average playing time reached 22.8 minutes, his average of 10.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 0.6 steals and 1.2 blocks, and he also had 2.3 turnovers and 2.2 fouls, with a shooting percentage of 56.1%, a three-point shooting percentage of 25%, and a free throw shooting percentage of 62.3%.

From the perspective of characteristics, Williams has a very good physical fitness, he has a very strong figure, and he also has a very good ability to fight. Williams has good inside scoring ability on the offensive end, he can create certain threats in the opponent's inside, and he also has good passing and support abilities. Williams has excellent personal abilities on the defensive end. He has a pretty good rebounding ability and he can also provide some support in protecting the basket. However, Williams' ability to score independently is relatively limited, he still seems passive on the offensive end, and he lacks basic shooting ability. Not only that, Williams is obviously older, and his contribution to the offensive end is indeed relatively limited, and his skills are relatively rough. At this age, he is unable to perform at the dominant level in the NCAA arena, which also shows that his potential has limited future development prospects, and it is unrealistic for him to develop more skills on the offensive end.

Celtics sent Kristaps Porzingis away in previous transactions, and inside veteran Al Horford also has the possibility of leaving or retiring, and the team also needs to improve the competitiveness and lineup depth of the inside. In this case, a black and hard player like Williams has also become an ideal choice for the team. However, Williams' characteristics are more or less overlapping with the team's other black and hard inside player, Neemias Queta, and retaining two such players seems to be a waste of places. Don't know how the Celtics will make their choice next, will they consider sending Keta away and giving Williams more performance opportunities to help him grow as soon as possible next season?
