The Suns may be forced to start over with the failed Big Three Durant, Bill and Booker

Basketball

According to US sports media F/W reporter Nico Martinez. After another failed season, Phoenix Suns owner Matt Ishbiya vowed to make some big changes in pursuit of the championship. Unfortunately for him, however, the Suns may have no choice but to keep their Big Three and run another year with the same troublesome roster.

"Unless the Nuggets come to Durant, I can't see where Durant's landing site will be at this moment, and Bill and his wife really love living in Phoenix, so I don't think that will change," Sam Amik said on the Ringer NBA Show. The Suns gave up everything and formed a team centered on Durant, Booker and Bill, but it has been a disaster since bringing them together. Aside from the ongoing health struggles and chemistry issues, the trio didn’t play well on the court, and Phoenix has been trying to stay competitive. In the 2024-25 season, the Suns ranked 11th in the Western Conference with a 36-46 record and could not even make the play-offs. The disaster left head coach Mike Budenholzer losing his job and would also part ways with Kevin Durant and Bradley Bill if decided by the Suns.

Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists this season, and his statistics are stable, but his inability to get close is a major issue that could have lost his team to victory. As a last desperate move, the Suns could have traded Durant to build a supporting cast, but his value is now falling as he approaches his 37th birthday. The truth is that there are not many teams in the market for Kevin, and those interested (such as the Houston Rockets) may not be willing to meet Phoenix's asking price. The only selling point of Durant’s contract is that he has only one year left in the 2025-26 season, worth $54.7 million. The situation for Bradley Bill is even more serious. The veteran defender has hardly played since he came here and has been poor, averaging 17.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game and shooting 49.7% from the field. His contract is a huge burden for the Suns, reaching $110 million in the next two years. Worse, Bill currently has a ban on trading clause that prevents the Suns from trading him without his approval. Despite the bad situation in Phoenix, Bill has said he doesn’t want to move, and Amik’s report confirms that he and his wife are happy with their living conditions.

This means the Suns can't easily get rid of their roster situation. With their star already locked in, filling the rest of the roster doesn’t leave much flexibility left behind, which is why Phoenix has been so top-heavy since joining Kevin Durant.

There is no doubt that the Suns will work overtime this summer to build a suitable team for Devin Booker, but since most of their caps have been used up, this limits what they can do in free agents and trading markets. At this point, the Suns' only way to improve is to start from the inside, what do you think?
