The Spurs' 2014 NBA champion believes Giannis Antetokounmpo may eventually join San Antonio.

Danny Green believes that given the increasingly uncertain future prospects for Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, he may eventually join the Spurs.

Former San Antonio Spurs guard Danny Green said this week that he believes Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo will eventually join San Antonio.

On Tuesday, Green said on ESPN's NBA Today program that tax factors and team assets are key factors in the Spurs' real goal of becoming the two-time MVP winner.

"He wanted to go to a tax-promoted state, so Florida was an option, but I don't think Miami and the Orlando Magic had enough resources to sign him," Green said.

Green played for the Spurs for eight seasons and won the NBA championship in 2014 with the team. He believes that Texas-based teams are more likely to be traded.

"I think he will eventually join the Houston Rockets or the San Antonio Spurs," Green added. "He will stay in Texas, and the Dallas Mavericks will retain their draft picks. There are only three other teams... He won't go to Memphis, and I don't know if Memphis has enough strength. But the other tax-free states I can think of are Texas, Tennessee and Florida."

Previously, speculation about Antetokounmpo's future has heated up. ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Monday that the 30-year-old striker was "open to exploring his best long-term direction to stay with the Milwaukee Bucks or go play elsewhere." The Bucks were eliminated by the Indiana Pacers in the first round of the 2025 NBA playoffs, which has raised questions about the team's future development trajectory. The Spurs became the number one contender in the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade

Antetokounmpo played for the Bucks in 12 seasons of his career and won the NBA Finals MVP in 2021, with three years left in the contract. Last season, he averaged 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game, with a shooting percentage of up to 60.1%.

It has been reported that Antetokounmpo may intend to fight alongside another star player in a tax-free state. Currently, Texas, Florida and Tennessee are the only three states that do not impose personal income tax, so San Antonio may qualify these conditions.

The Spurs recently won the second pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, further strengthening their growing asset pool. The team now has the rising superstar Victor Victor Vibaniama and the best rookie of the season Stephen Castell. With the joining of All-Star guard De Aaron Fox, the San Antonio Spurs are seeking to build a new era of Big Three and accelerate their return to the championship path.

Although formal deal negotiations with Antetokounmpo have not been confirmed yet, Green's remarks have further raised speculation about where the former MVP will go after leaving the Milwaukee Bucks.

Green's recognition of the San Antonio Spurs as a serious suitor undoubtedly adds weight to the team, especially given his familiarity with the Spurs' organizational structure and the team's ability to build a championship-level roster. As the offseason unfolds and the Bucks weigh options, the San Antonio Spurs' salary flexibility, draft picks and a young core roster may make it a reliable place to be one of the NBA's most dominant players.
