Is the scoring ability seriously underestimated? The Rockets new wing player is actually more than just a defensive gate?
In a previous NBA preseason game, the Houston Rockets, who rested almost all important rotation players, defeated the Atlanta Hawks at home 133-115. After this game, the Rockets maintained their winning streak in the preseason, recording a 4-0 record; while the Hawks ended their two-game winning streak in the preseason, with a final record of 2 wins and 2 losses.
In this game, the Rockets' new starting wing player Josh Okogie maintained his excellent form during the preseason. Okogie played for 32 minutes and 11 seconds, shooting 8 of 15, 2 of 5 from beyond the three-point line, and 10 of 12 free throws. He scored the second highest score in the game with 28 points, plus 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocks. He also had 2 turnovers and 2 fouls, with a plus-minus of +14. Okogie still maintains an extremely excellent personal defensive level on the defensive end. His defensive contribution is obvious to all, and his defensive ability is definitely at the top level. Not only that, Okogie's performance on the offensive end can be said to far exceed expectations. He showed comprehensive scoring ability, his breakthrough ability and impact are quite amazing, and he also caused a lot of inside damage. Not only that, his performance in outside shooting seems to be much better than everyone imagined. Overall, Okogie, who got a lot of playing time and ball rights, proved in this game that he is an all-round player with both offense and defense. He is fully capable of taking on more tasks on the court.
Okogie was born in September 1998. He is 27 years old, 193cm tall and 96kg in weight. He is a wing player selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the 20th overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft. The Charlotte Hornets acquired Okogie from the Phoenix Suns in a trade midway through last season. After joining the Hornets, Okogie played a total of 15 times in the NBA regular season, averaging 18.3 minutes per game. He averaged 8.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.8 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game. He also had 1 turnover and 1.3 fouls. He shot 38.8% from the field, 32% from the three-point range, and 77.4% from the free throw line. He played a total of 4 times in the previous Men's Basketball African Cup, averaging 24.9 minutes per game. He averaged 14.5 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.5 blocks per game. He also had 3 turnovers and 1.5 fouls. He shot 48.9% from the field, 26.7% from the three-point range and 90.9% from the free throw line.
During the preseason, Okogie averaged 20.4 minutes per game in these 4 games. He averaged 13 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1 steal, and 1.3 blocks per game. He also had 0.8 turnovers and 1.8 fouls. He shot 55.6% from the field, 40% from the three-point range, and 81.8% from the free throw line. Okogie joined the Rockets this summer with a veteran's minimum salary contract. Considering his performance throughout his career, Rockets fans are actually not optimistic about his joining. Although he can play a big role on the defensive end, his contribution on the offensive end is also very limited. Unexpectedly, during the preseason, Okogie's offensive performance far exceeded expectations. His scoring ability and shooting ability seemed to be much stronger than everyone imagined. Considering that there are considerable injury risks in the Rockets' current lineup, maybe Okogie really has a chance to become a key figure in the team's rotation at the beginning of the season?
