In 2003, England lost 1-3 to Australia in a friendly match, and Southampton legend James Beatty made his national team debut. It is worth mentioning that this game was also Rooney's England debut. James Beatty said: "When I came to the national team, there were only a few people who were willing to talk to us newcomers - Beckham, Campbell, Nicky Butt and Scholes, probably these guys. And the others just sat there, they had small circles of their respective clubs.

"For us new internationals, it was a very important experience - me, Bridge, Upson and Trevor Sinclair. Beckham and Campbell are really good people, they made a few of us feel welcome. ”
