On September 19, according to famous reporter Shams, defender Dennis Smith Jr. has agreed to sign a one-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks to return to his old club.

Smith will return to the team that originally selected him - in the 2017 NBA Draft, the Mavericks selected him with the ninth pick in the first round. Next, he will participate in the Mavericks training camp. The Mavericks' lineup is full, but guard Brandon Williams holds a partial guarantee contract (the team still has room for adjustment).

Smith spent her first season with the Mavericks, and was then sent to the New York Knicks in the deal to "Trade Porzingis to the Mavericks". The physical defender played for the Knicks from January 2019 to February 2021; he was then traded to the Detroit Pistons in a "send Rose to the Knicks" deal.

Since then, Smith has played for three different NBA teams in three consecutive seasons, namely the Portland Trail Blazers, the Charlotte Hornets and the Brooklyn Nets, the most recent time in the 2023-24 season. In the 2024-25 season, he played for Real Madrid in the European Basketball League.

27-year-old Smith played in 326 games in seven NBA seasons, averaging 9.7 points, 4.2 assists and 3 rebounds per game.
