Sky explains why Chelsea was charged: paying millions of pounds to player representatives, not counting in accounts

September 11th, the FA official issued a statement today, filing 74 financial accusations against Chelsea. Chelsea then stated that it was the club that took the initiative to report financial violations. Sky Sports wrote an article explaining the cause of the incident. The article stated that the emergence of these allegations stems from potential violations discovered by the current Chelsea boss during the 2022 acquisition of the club for investigation. After completing the acquisition in May 2022, they immediately took the initiative to report these historical potential violations to the FA, the Premier League and UEFA.

It is reported that during the investigation of the acquisition process, many transfer-related payments were revealed to the offshore company, the family members of the player and the agent. The amount involved is as much as millions of pounds, and the money is not registered in accounts to the FA, the Premier League and UEFA.

Chelsea's new owner has set aside £100 million from the £2.5 billion acquisition to deal with "unforeseen liability". In July 2023, Chelsea agreed to pay 8.6 million pounds to UEFA to reach a settlement on the incomplete financial report of the Abramovich period (2012-2019).

For the past three years, Chelsea has fully cooperated with the investigation and submitted all documents and data requested. For these reasons, economic penalties may be a more appropriate sanctions method.
