TA: UEFA launches investigation into alleged financial breaches by Juventus
Hupu reported on October 17 that The Athletic reported that Juventus is under investigation by UEFA due to possible financial irregularities.
UEFA informed the Juventus club last month that UEFA has launched an investigation process for the three-year period from the 2022-23 season to the 2024-25 season, and the results are expected to be announced in the spring of 2026.
If violations are confirmed, Juventus may face financial penalties or sports-level restrictions. For example, the number of player registrations in the team roster for UEFA competitions will be limited.
UEFA's "Football Income Rules" stipulate that a club's loss limit within three years is 60 million euros. However, if the club meets the four conditions of "good financial status" determined by UEFA, the annual loss limit can be increased by 10 million euros, and the total loss limit during a specific evaluation period can reach a maximum of 90 million euros.
The four criteria defined by UEFA are as follows:
-Net assets are positive;
-Quick ratio (current assets minus inventory, divided by current liabilities) is not less than 1;
-Debt ratio (relative to revenue) is at a sustainable level;
-The club has the "ability to continue as a going concern" (that is, it will not go bankrupt immediately).
Juventus is currently participating in this season's Champions League, having scored 2 points in the first two games of the group stage.
The news of this investigation was released as Juventus was preparing for its shareholders’ meeting on November 7. On October 9 (Thursday), the club said in a statement that CEO Maurizio Scanavino will step down on the day of the shareholders' meeting after three years in office.
In July 2023, Juventus was banned from participating in European competitions for a season by UEFA for violating club licensing regulations and Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, and was fined 20 million euros. Of which 10 million euros are conditional fines, which will only be enforced if there are irregularities in Juventus' annual financial statements in 2023, 2024 or 2025.
In 2022, UEFA added the "Team Cost Rules" (SCR) to its charter. The rules limit how much a club can spend on its first team by linking it to football-related income. This rule will be implemented in stages: the expenditure limit in the 2023-24 season will be 90% of revenue, which was 80% in the previous season, and this season it will be reduced to 70%.
Currently, Juventus ranks fifth in the Italian Football League with 12 points from 6 games. On October 12 (Sunday), Juventus will challenge Como away from home.
